Wind Power Disadvantages

Wind Power Disadvantages

There are definite wind power disadvantages, but they are not absolute. They only take on meaning relative to the system objectives and the alternatives that are available to support the objectives. For instance, generally speaking, wind power is intermittent (or at least fairly variable). Wind speeds will vary at a particular site. Then again, for a solar alternative, so does sunlight intensity. However, in contrast to solar, power production through wind resources can be noisy (depending on the turbine type, size and proximity to the dwelling). If silent power production is a system objective, then silent wind turbine blade design is a relevant factor and needs to be carefully considered and evaluated. Therefore, when considering any wind power disadvantages keep in mind how relevant they are to specific system objectives and site constraints.

1) Intermittent power source - wind power is intermittent by nature and very very sensitive to location

2) Noise pollution - wind turbines can be noisy (depending on turbine type and rotor blade design).

3) Scenic disturbance - wind turbine towers can negatively impact scenic views, most pronounced when elevated to the proper wind collection zone.

4) Regular maintenance - since they extract energy from the wind by mechanical means, regular (almost hyper vigilant) maintenance is very important and required for wind power systems compared to, for instance, residential solar systems.

5) Zoning Sensitive - Acquiring permits for suburban (and some rural) sites can be problematic.

6) No Reliable Industry Product Standards - There are various manufacturer subscribed associations for the industry (e.g. American Wind Energy Association) but no agreed to standards for comparative product analysis and behavior exist, making product comparisons difficult.

7) Residential Wind Power Market is Young - Very much a caveat emptor mentality requiring significant due diligence on the part of buyers to avoid being duped by the unscrupulous. Knowledge is power.

Solar Power
This is great resource information for news reporters seeking a better understanding of solar power and solar alternatives.
Green is the way to go, or at least an understanding of green alternatives.

Residential Wind Turbines
Great read, I really enjoyed it!

I have a website on Solar power so I am very interested in these types of subjects.

Kind Regards John
